Re: “Thankfully cancer does not run in my family. My father's side has longevity. My mother lived to 84 and died from Kidney failure due to diabetes. Too overweight for too long.”
There's no cancer in my immediate family either, but if anyone gets it, it will probably be me. Too much time as a kid spent outside with no shirt. I remember so many sunburns with massive chunks of skin peeling off my back. And now I have about a thousand moles.

My mom died of CHF, age 87, and my dad indirectly from a stroke, age 96. Of the two, I'd far rather have the heart failure. It was agonizing for mom in the last few months, but still better than 3 years knowing that you've lost half of your mind and body. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

My youngest aunt died on January 2nd. She too had dementia, but she literally died by pulling a feeding tube from her stomach after surgery, then refusing to let them fix it. Her kids could probably have overruled her but opted not to. Her husband died last summer and she was lost without him. Age 91. I still have two aunts left, both in their mid-90s. They'll be gone soon.

I'd say all this bodes well for my chances, but I didn't know my mother's family. There was a falling out before I came along, so I never knew them even though they lived less than a mile from my father's parents. I could probably research how old they were when they died. I'm not sure I'd know how they died...

Backing up a bit: My maternal grandfather was dying of cancer. He was also a drunk and abusive toward my grandmother, so he'd been kicked out of his house. (He was apparently kicked out of the house many times. The 1920 census says the grandmother and her kids were the only residents at that address!)

My mom, an Air Force wife, took him in when nobody else would. My family was in Delaware at the time. So, along with her 5 children (I was #6), she cared for her father for two years as he wasted away and died. She pled with her brothers and sisters to take him back. They refused. But before he died, he changed his will and bequeathed all his money... about $12,000... to my mother. For that, they disowned her.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

You are absolutely correct De. I talked with him right up to his final minutes before he committed euthenasia.

He was in horrible pain and there was nothing anyone could do about it. I do not ever want to be in that situation either.

Thankfully cancer does not run in my family. My father's side has longevity. My mother lived to 84 and died from Kidney failure due to diabetes. Too overweight for too long.

She was the kindest person all the way up until the end. I miss her.. Dad died from dementia and we observed and marked every single stage of it as he entered each one.

They are apparent and obvious when they occur to anyone who is actually reading about them and following them.

Losing one's mind is not a great way to go either. It is protracted and debasing. I felt very sorry for my father going thru all those stages as he was a man's man.

I can only hope God just takes me when it is time and does not allow me to go thru what my father did. I put an end to it by not allowing the medical community to replace his pacemaker and to allow him to die of natural causes.
