The last post was really intended to be an introduction for what follows. The prelude grew longer than expected so I made it a post in its own right.

My wife is currently picking up a second auction's wins. It worked out, since Manchester (the location of her first pickup) and this other town are only about 15 miles apart.

The second auction was pretty big and we won five lots, each a portion of the seller's massive stamp collection. The total cost, including the auction house's cut, was $113.85. I have no idea what this stuff is worth, but they add to similar sets we won at auction last year. So, now, not only do I have a lot of uncancelled sheets and plate blocks from my friend, I also have a whole lot of these PRE-ASSEMBLED binders, with a few more uncancelled stamps included on each page.

As I said before, how is this a hobby? What's there to do? Am I really going to spend days flipping the pages and reading what was written on them by their publisher? LOL. That's no hobby. It's more like a bad habit I've got to quit...

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Ten years ago, my buddy was retiring and selling things off in preparation for moving. One thing he'd tried to sell was his stamp collection. He'd put the whole collection into a spreadsheet and knew its face value to be around $1,700. He told me nobody would give him even 40 cents on the dollar.

I immediately told him I'd give him 70 cents on the dollar and that's what we did.

Until then, I wasn't a collector of new stamps. I don't think they're nearly as interesting as used stamps... preferably still on their envelopes. I enjoy the process of getting stamps off of envelopes, figuring out where they belong in an album and deciding which stamp is in the best condition for display. None of that is applicable when collecting NEW stamps. In my friend's collection, his plate blocks were even mounted in albums. So how's that a hobby? What's there to do? I took his boxes of albums home where, so far, they've remained - still boxed up.

Then, two years ago, a friend across the street from my buddy died. They'd worked together on organizing the friend's stamps, and it was a HUGE collection, worth some $3,000. The deceased's wife offered the collection to my buddy for free, but he politely declined. Last year, the wife died. The kids showed up to clean out the house, and a big box - the entire collection - materialized on my buddy's front porch. I guess someone had written a note for what to do with them and the children dutifully complied.

My friend, having already disposed of his own collection, really didn't want them, so he gave them to me.

I've now got what anyone would have to call a big stamp collection. But it's still the cancelled stamps that I enjoy, and I intend to get back to working on them when the basement becomes available.
