Re: “My youngest aunt died on January 2nd.”That was Gen. I found out yesterday that her older sister Rose died Sunday, January 28th, of a suspected heart attack. She was 95 and, at least, went the way most of us would want: Unexpectedly and while sleeping. None of her siblings had such an easy exit.

My paternal grandfather had nine children that survived to adulthood. Now, just one remains: my Aunt Mary. She's an Air Force colonel, like my dad. She's been suffering from severe dementia and has been in the care of a live-in attendant for several years. Mary is 98 and was expected to pass last year but somehow 'soldiered' on. Meanwhile, her two younger sisters have just died.

They were wonderful people, all, and I'll miss them. Talk about the end of an era...

I remember so many sunburns with massive chunks of skin peeling off my back. And now I have about a thousand moles.

My mom died of CHF, age 87, and my dad indirectly from a stroke, age 96. Of the two, I'd far rather have the heart failure. It was agonizing for mom in the last few months, but still better than 3 years knowing that you've lost half of your mind and body. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

My youngest aunt died on January 2nd. She too had dementia, but she literally died by pulling a feeding tube from her stomach after surgery, then refusing to let them fix it. Her kids could probably have overruled her but opted not to. Her husband died last summer and she was lost without him. Age 91. I still have two aunts left, both in their mid-90s. They'll be gone soon.

I'd say all this bodes well for my chances, but I didn't know my mother's family. There was a falling out before I came along, so I never knew them even though they lived less than a mile from my father's parents. I could probably research how old they were when they died. I'm not sure I'd know how they died...

Backing up a bit: My maternal grandfather was dying of cancer. He was also a drunk and abusive toward my grandmother, so he'd been kicked out of his house. (He was apparently kicked out of the house many times. The 1920 census says the grandmother and her kids were the only residents at that address!)

My mom, an Air Force wife, took him in when nobody else would. My family was in Delaware at the time. So, along with her 5 children (I was #6), she cared for her father for two years as he wasted away and died. She pled with her brothers and sisters to take him back. They refused. But before he died, he changed his will and bequeathed all his money... about $12,000... to my mother. For that, they disowned her.
