It's revealing that when push came to shove, this man saw no options for himself other than (1) San Francisco or (2) China. What does San Francisco have that might appeal to him? Chinatown, of course - the largest one outside of Asia.

I surmise that this is a Chinese man who lived in the United States for 30 years and NEVER learned English or how to function in American society. By failing to adapt, he was utterly screwed when his comfortable environment changed.

In the world of Darwin, this is known as survival of the fittest . . . which he was not.
