This is up for auction in a few days. It's tempting... but I think it's going to be out of my range. Bidding is already over $300.

Moreover, I like to do research and figure out things that, hopefully, give me a better understanding of what high priced things are worth. The other day, for instance, there was a small, unimpressive looking painting that nobody was bidding on. I think it was $5 or so when it caught our eye. We figured out who the artist was... that she was pretty well known but the auction house had misspelled her name... and learned that she'd been killed by her husband in a murder suicide that also killed the family dog. Hey, that sounded interesting! So we bid and sent the price waaaaaay up before losing to just one other party who had apparently also researched it. The point being, I like to learn things that others don't before I bid and, thereby, get what I, at least, think is a great deal. In the case of this letter, though, I don't know anything that people with a lot more experience than me don't also know. Maybe T. Roosevelt's signed letters are very common. Or exceedingly rare. I don't figure to outsmart the opposition on this lot! But, since it speaks of "the canal," it's really cool.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
