Holly Valance, the former Neighbours star, has declared “everyone starts off as a leftie” before realising the ideas are “crap”, as she attended the launch of the Popular Conservatives.
Ms Valance, also a model and pop singer, accompanied her property tycoon husband Nick Candy to the event, where Liz Truss, the former prime minister, and other MPs on the Right of the party set out their vision for the new fringe group.
The ex-soap actress, 40, described the speakers at the PopCon event as “fantastic” and expressed the desire for Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, the former business secretary, to become prime minister.
Asked about what her politics were, Ms. Valance said: “I would say that everyone starts off as a leftie and then wakes up at some point after you start either making money, working, trying to run a business, trying to buy a home, and then realises what crap ideas they all are and then you go to the Right.”
Well, Winston Churchill said: "If you are not a Liberal at 25, you have no heart. If you are not a Conservative at 35, you have no brain."
I'm a Classical Liberal ... always have been. So no, Ms. Valance - I've NEVER been a leftist. But, I'm glad to see that you've seen the light of reality.
She told GB News: “I thought Liz (Truss) was actually really really interesting to listen to. Jacob (Rees-Mogg) for PM.”
She also described Lee Anderson, the former Conservative Party chairman, as “awesome”, before adding: “Love a northerner – straight to the point and very sensible and for real people.”
Her remarks came as Rishi Sunak faces growing discontent among Right-wing backbenchers.
Ms. Truss used her speech to claim that “Left-wing extremists” are now running large parts of Britain and criticised her own party for failing to champion Conservative values.
Mr. Anderson said that politicians were “out of touch with the public” on net zero, and that he had suggested allowing people to opt out of green levies on their gas bills but that the idea had been dismissed.
Ms Valance said: “I’m a citizen like everyone else here who’s concerned about the way things are going in the country.
“Many things worry and bother me with two little children to bring up – what they might inherit. So I want to come and listen to ideas, good ideas.”
Also in attendance was Nigel Farage, who after the event said that he agreed with the group’s “leaflet and stated aims”, but criticised the lack of discussion about immigration at the event.
