Whenever radical change is imposed quickly, it is a shock to the system. In the case you've described, it would be akin to a massive, impregnable bubble being placed around the United States (with tubes extending to Hawaii, Alaska and the various territories.) The shock would be horrendous... a bloodbath... as we struggled to deal with food production and distribution at the expense of medicines, disaster assistance, equipment repair, power production, crime prevention. Everything for which there is a foreign dependency would shut down. People would die by the tens of millions. In a year, perhaps things would begin to improve, but I wouldn't be surprised if the population was sliced in half. Disease would be rampant. And so would barbarism.

Like it or not, we are heavily dependent on the rest of the world right now. What we need is a managed separation, not a 'sink or swim' solution.

Your question, though, is what the country would look like in five years. My guess is that we would be a nation on the improve, with a population of 50 to 100 million.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
