We could easily crank up production in a few years such that we wouldn’t need to rely on other countries.

The only food we really import right now is fruits and vegetables from South America. Were capable of producing enough grains and meats here.

Fuel wouldn’t be a problem. Electric power might be an issue, we get a lot if it now from Canada. But we could crank up NG power plants. Long term would need nuke.

We could get medicine production up in a year or so.

Bringing all our manufacturing back would take time. But most manufacturing done overseas is American technology. We sent manufacturing overseas for cheap labor. And what we sent was our technology & expertise.

Prices for most everything certainly would go up. I think with planning we could do it in a 4 or 5 years.

Hell, foreign companies would want to relocate to the United States. We could get the chip and computer manufacturers in Taiwan to move their plants here. Trump plan was to bring manufacturing back to the states. It only took a year for steel plants to start opening back up.

I think you’re overstating foreign dependency. Our main foreign dependency is cost not expertise and skill.

Re: “What if for five years we...”
Whenever radical change is imposed quickly, it is a shock to the system. In the case you've described, it would be akin to a massive, impregnable bubble being placed around the United States (with tubes extending to Hawaii, Alaska and the various territories.) The shock would be horrendous... a bloodbath... as we struggled to deal with food production and distribution at the expense of medicines, disaster assistance, equipment repair, power production, crime prevention. Everything for which there is a foreign dependency would shut down. People would die by the tens of millions. In a year, perhaps things would begin to improve, but I wouldn't be surprised if the population was sliced in half. Disease would be rampant. And so would barbarism.

Like it or not, we are heavily dependent on the rest of the world right now. What we need is a managed separation, not a 'sink or swim' solution.

Your question, though, is what the country would look like in five years. My guess is that we would be a nation on the improve, with a population of 50 to 100 million.
