BREAKING: Bureau of Prisons failed to prevent nearly 200 deaths by suicide, DOJ watchdog finds
The Federal Bureau of Prisons failed to prevent the deaths of 187 inmates who died by suicide over the course of eight years, a Justice Department watchdog found. More than half of those inmates were in “single-cell confinement” — more commonly described as solitary confinement — when they died, the new watchdog report says.
"Numerous operational and managerial deficiencies” created unsafe conditions in federal prisons that contributed to many of the 344 deaths the DOJ inspector general reviewed, over half of which were suicides, according to the report.
