I have to disagree De.
America's defense expenditures are only 3.5% of GDP. Pretty light.

What America is spending on 'stupid sh!t' is obscene.

joe biden spending a Trillion Dollars we ain't got on 'green energy' initiatives is problematic at best.

An invasion of illegal aliens across our southern border AND providing all kinds of money and benefits for the criminals invading is even more problematic.

I'm sure you can think up many other wastes of 'We The Peoples' moneys which ought to be used for such things as building new ships both for commercial and military use.

Re: “...we could just roll over on our back and put our feet in the air like good little lap dogs.”
In college, a professor had the class play a game with a very real reward. He put us in groups and gave us a challenge. The challenge itself doesn't matter... it had no "right" or "wrong" answer. But he told us that if our group could have 100% agreement on one (or two!) person's solution, that person would receive a full letter-grade increase for the course.

We sat down and immediately found that no two of us had the same solution. Then it became a matter of which one of us we would award the prize to. We voted and, no surprise, everyone voted for him or herself. I then said we should draw straws. The girl next to me said, "No. If I can't have it, I don't want anyone else to have it either." I said, "But you MIGHT get it! You'd have as good a chance as anyone." She said, "No. I'm not lucky." I got frustrated. "Look, let's just give it to someone. ANYONE. I'll bow out, okay?" She said, "Only if you'll give it to me." I said, "No, not you. Not after this. Not me and not you. Let's give it to Bruce. Or anyone else in the group. You can pick." She refused. And that's how it went.

We were the only group that did not give the reward to anyone. It made me feel a bit ill, especially since the group assignment was permanent. I had to work with that b*tch for the rest of the semester. But it did teach me something important:  Some people feel it's more important to hurt others than it is to have a chance at helping themselves.

The analogy I always use is that such a person will, if in the water when the Titanic was sinking, cling to and drown a fellow swimmer rather than giving either of them a chance of getting to a lifeboat.

I think that's what you're doing with Russia. You deem it more important to hurt Russia than it is to save the United States.

Russia is a trivial concern. I know it wasn't that way when you were in Vietnam, but things have changed. China is our mortal enemy, and we are blowing our money and military muscle on our historic hatred of a nation that no longer poses a threat. The Chinese leaders must be laughing their asses off as they continue marching toward their goal of having 800 warships by 2030. Since we aren't even treading water in that regard, we'll have about 250 by then.
