It gets its value from its limited (for all practical purposes) supply, it's easy mobility, its fame, its impossibility to counterfeit, its integrity, and society's recognition that there aren't very many things that would be better suited for representing and storing value.

If they can solve the transaction difficulties - one of which you named - it will be better "money" than dollars . . . which are being counterfeited quite rapidly by both criminals and governments.

BTW, *nothing* has value beyond what society chooses to assign it. You know this, so I don't know why you keep bringing it up.
