He became not only a Republican, but Ulysses S. Grant’s personal friend and campaign manager in the 1868 presidential election, earning the hatred of many, death threats, and even an assassination attempt. The former partisan leader once quipped to a friend, “Hell is being a Republican in Virginia.”
