Bingo, Micro - good memory and good math. Was seventeen when the draft was 'suspended'. We were stationed in Japan for three years after my Dad got back from Nam.
Was there when the Pueblo incident happened, the sarin attack on a Japanese railroad station, and just after the Tokyo Olympics. Can't remember if the Tet offensive was during our stay there, or right before it. BUT we did study that in our Junior and Senior high school. No TV that entire time, but the Stars and Stripes was a remarkably unbiased source of news, both print and radio. We also subscribed to the Tokyo Times which was also an excellent resource. Our Junior and Senior High school there, on the military base was EXCELLENT in math, sciences, history, and social studies. Over 50% percent of the teachers had their masters degrees, and around 30% had doctorates. Still remember many of those teachers - Dr. Moriwaki (Univ of Hawaii, double doctorate - biology and history), Mrs. Tate - eighth grade algebra, Mrs.Yamamoto, sophmore Geometry - one of my favourite classes because geometric proofs are not arguable and are elegant. Many others; that school, Chofu, was unique in the military bases - best one of all the bases, Army, AirForce, and even Navy, in Japan.

So, yes, I was deprived of the privilege of being 'drafted' - but was close to the action in many other ways.

On the TV - did get to watch the Lunar Landing and walk from a neighbor that had one - but other than that- didn't miss it at all. *s* Oh, yeah, it WAS in black and white. Color was only for the ultra-rich - lol.

Professor,

no offense, but yer still young.... Enjoy being that way as long as ya can.. I take it you did not get the privilege of being drafted?

No finer vacation time than basking in the humidity and sun in between monsoons while being simmered in the heat there.
They got more snakes than we got ants. Half of em will kill ya.

Sorry ya missed out on all the fun there. What I remember was trying to sell my house so I could move close to Grumman's manufacturing plant only the interest rates on mortgages were in the 20's during the Carter disaster. I couldn't sell my home and I bloody well could not afford the high interest on a new mortgage either.
It was just as well. We still live in the house I designed and helped to build and raised our children from newborns to adults. Lots of memories here.

It was a different time and in some respects a simpler time. I was working on my engineering degrees then.

I liked things when they were less obvious stealing and cheating us.. lol!!!!
