"... but could you really say we won Vietnam, cultural problems that came from the war ..."

We won the battlefield in the Vietnam War, and ... if our leaders had had the intestinal fortitude ... we could have put North Vietnam down like a rabid dog. But, it would have been a veritable bloodbath - mainly on the Communist side - and I'm not sure our society would have stomached the slaughter necessary to successfully prosecute that war to an end desired by the United States - especially since the conflict in Vietnam did not directly threaten our national security and we were propping up what turned out to be corrupt regimes in South Vietnam. AND, I would submit that our "cultural problems" at home in the 60s and 70s were present and boiling with or without the war in Vietnam. The war in Vietnam really was not a cause of the societal upheaval at home, but rather a focal point exploited by malcontents to sow discord within our society.

As always, just my two cents.
