Was totally unaware of Joe's involvement in the creation of DHS - but, by his own words in a Brookings commentary by him, he was. Disappointing to say the least.
But, we can NOT afford to forget who was THE INSPIRATION and main CONSPIRATOR in the creation of DHS.
That was George W. Bush; and your comments about 'intrusive' government fall squarely on Bush's shoulders; in spades. Remember the FIRST HUGE intrusion of Bush's term in office was the 'medical records' act/stuff that intruded into the private patient-doctor relationship of every single US Citizen. Talk about a HARD deep stater control freak, GWB was right their floating at the top with all sorts of other turds. Notice how the release of even more files about the JFK assination after the death of H.W.Bush went almost completely unnoticed. HWB WAS the CIA during that time period, and, if nothing else, was involved in the CIA planned 'black flag' op aimed at Miami (and at Cuba) that had long been rumored to exist, but was proven true by the first (50 uear rule) release.
Anywhoooz, back to Joe, he, just like Susan Collins and GWB, were extreme statists - very much opposed to Constitutional Conservatism and very limited guvmint.
It was an eye opener to read that commentary.

BTW: GWB is still deluded about HWB's re-election loss - he blames Ross Perot completely, still thinks the betrayal of HWB to his READ MY LIPS. NO NEW TAXES. played little to no role in the HWB loss to Clinton. GWB is dead wrong. That betrayal was the KEY factor in his defeat. Ross Perot DID manage to siphon off votes, but only because the MMS hid/never covered two main facts about Ross.
#1: Perot promised to shut down the 'guvmint feeding trough'. The media (and HWB) never bothered to point out that the feeding trough (guvmint contracts) is precisely where Perot made his fortune in Ed's Computer systems (EDS).
#2. Perot's wife was a HUGE promoter, president of North Texas region, PLANNED PARENTHOOD. Something that, if broadcast, would have cost him almost all of the votes he siphoned off.
Summed up: I have more respect for HWB for his WWII service under fire than I ever did for GWB.
and There is not much diff twixt GWB and Joe.
