In 2017, I left Atlanta for Franklin, North Carolina, for a few days to be in the totality. Props to http://lazyhikerbrewing.com There were no clouds to be any issue at all, so I know personally about the "360 twilight" effect, which is quite accurate. I looked briefly but didn’t identify any stars at all, while I mostly focused on the sun and the total experience. Can’t do everything in two and a half minutes, clod’s lovers notwithstanding.

Here's one of the photos we took during totality. The horizon lit up - in ALL directions. We were in the back lot of a Walmart, so I couldn't see all directions. You'll just have to take my word that what I'm saying is true.

During totality, it doesn't get terribly dark. The stars that emerge tend to be high in the sky, near the sun. This is part of what makes it such an unreal event.

Anyone who says he's seen totality and that it got totally dark is a liar.
