Good point! And you're right. But the problem I ran into was that my tomatoes were becoming leggy well before the ground was ready for them. Leggy tomatoes don't do well under grow lights. They can't support their own weight and either lean on the plants next to them or topple and don't get light.

Tomatoes grow quickly. From the time I pot the seeds to when I can move them into the ground is only about a month. Up here, if you're lucky, you can plant tomatoes on May 1. If you're not lucky, May 20.

I wouldn't again plant tomato seeds before April 1st: I had been giving them too much time in pots before they could go in the ground, and the plants got leggy. Leggy is bad.

Leggy tomatoes aren’t a problem. Tomatoes grow roots from any part of the stem that touches soil, so you can plant them deep, leaving a few leaves above ground, and they will grow normally. I have heard mixed messages about doing this with peppers (which are related) but you can’t do this with other plants.

Good luck.
