I saw Jupiter (which has now set.) And the comet is just to the west of it... but I couldn't see it. I've seen comets before... they often look like a smudge or a cloud. This one is a little better defined. See the photo to the right.

I had my mid-power binoculars. Maybe if I'd used the good ones... but the stars are usually so jumpy when high powered binoculars without a support are used. All I have tonight is my roadside trash bin (similar to the three that OCU sets out... 2x per week, and maybe you guys too.)

The next time I try this, I'm going to lay out a concrete floor for my fire pit and get a small blaze going. It's cold out there!

I think I'm going to get a notepad and start drawing the various constellations I spot. I hate not knowing their names and I bet they're easily identified. My dad, who was a navigator in WWII, would be ashamed that his kid recognizes so few of the stars. I used to love stargazing with him.

I'm heading outside to watch for the comet. I'm not optimistic. I only have a narrow gap in the "bowl" of surrounding mountains, and sunset has shifted more to the South than it used to be. I gather that the comet will be visible near the sunset, not in the nice gap I've got.
