I agree, but not for that reason. Market Cap reflects the sum value of the shares outstanding. But a company might just have 10% of its equity assigned to stock. In other words, the officers of a company might retain 90% ownership while having just 10% outstanding. The market cap won't take the 90% into account at all.

I personally don't think 'market cap' is all that great an indicator - except maybe in popularity.

Unfortunately, I just looked at Disney's 'Retained Earnings' on the Balance Sheet.

And it appears that disney's 'Retained Earnings' have been going up every year for the last four years.

(I think one might have to expand 'Total Equity' then 'Stockholders Equity to reach Retained Earnings.) 'all in Thousands' suggests disney might have some $46 Billion . . .
