De,
You don't really think 'used potting soil' is going to have any of the nutrients (that the plants need) in it any more do you?

Black Cow. That is a composted cow manure. It's what I use in my garden.

Do you have a compost box? Mine is about a four foot cube. Build yourself one. In the fall rake up all the 'leaf litter' you can find and fill it up. Next year build another compost box. After a couple few years you should have some really rich, black dirt in the box. (I also put worms whenever I find them in my compost box.)

True story. I had my compost box under a tree once upon a time. My girlFriend went and planted some of her 'Ampalaya' in the compost box. Ampalaya is an Asian vegetable also known as 'bittermelon' and she REALLY loves the stuff. It is also a climbing viney type plant. And it clomb out of the compost box and up into the tree. The poor girl had to get a tall stepladder to get up into the tree and harvest her fruits.

Zim.

Re: “Dehas a large amount of tomato plants.”
Not this year, I haven't.

My attempt to grow tomatoes from seed has been something of a disaster this year. Most of the seeds germinated and grew to a height of 2" and stalled there. I think it might be because I used very old potting soil, some of which came from old pots (so it had been used before.)

I've only transplanted eight tomatoes to the yard this year and they're all small. I'm not optimistic that they'll produce - except for the two cherry tomato plants since they always grow quickly.

This is my first year in a new location. In my experience, first year gardens are always poor. Next year will be better if the weather doesn't mess with me. (Up here, about one year in four is a gardening nightmare.)
