Why Does Compost Get Hot? | How to Make it in 4 Weeks

http://ecofamilylife.com/garden/why-does-a-compost-heap-get-hot-microorganisms-are-the-secret/

A compost heap will get hot as microorganisms break down organic matter. As microorganisms digest the organic matter the exothermic reaction heats up the pile. The compost pile itself acts like a blanket to keep the heat in and can quickly reach temperatures of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature of a hot compost pile usually ranges from 120°F to 160°F.

The article does go on with instructions.

I have put a layer of green grass clippings in my box . . . and it can get hot. Places in my layer looked more like ash.

Re: “Do you have a compost box? Mine is about a four foot cube.”
Thanks for the suggestion, but no. No box. The last time I made compost, it was a 6' x 15' pile of leaves, grass, manure and plant debris, about 4' high. It didn't compost as quickly as expected, maybe because of the cold winters. I spent a lot of time turning it and it was still three years before it was ready. There also was a shortage of worms. I think that before the compost pile froze, they burrowed deep into the earth beneath the pile and hibernated. They didn't return to that pile until mid summer each year, and never in quantity.

I have a larger property now - though there aren't as many nearby deciduous trees with their wonderful leaves.

I do plan to make a compost pile but when I get around to it, it's not going to fit in a box.
