Re: “I have put a layer of green grass clippings in my box . . . and it can get hot. Places in my layer looked more like ash.”
I have as well. But the heat comes from grass. Out here, the main compost ingredient is leaves. So far as I can tell, they don't emit heat.

The grass clippings I've been able to collect aren't very significant. I've even gone as far as to add fertilizer to the compost, but it doesn't work.

The problem is that when it snows, if the pile is hot it melts the snow and becomes waterlogged. A waterlogged pile doesn't get hot. Then it freezes solid and stays that way for the next four months. I suppose I could build a carport for my compost pile, but at some point it starts to get ridiculous.
