Some of the carpet bombing was pretty clearly with the intent of demoralizing Germany by killing tens of thousands of civilians. Hamburg and Dresden come to mind.

http://nypost.com/2024/05/27/world-news/netanyahu-admits-tragic-mistake-killed-civilians-in-rafah/

Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday blamed a “tragic mistake” for displaced civilians getting killed in a tent city in Rafah, a strike that sparked widespread condemnation, even from key allies. ...

“Despite our utmost efforts not to harm innocent civilians, last night, there was a tragic mistake,” Netanyahu told the Knesset Monday of Sunday’s strikes sparking a giant blaze in the tent city.

“We are investigating the incident and will obtain a conclusion because this is our policy,” he added above shouted objections from opposition members.

Israel had initially called it a counterattack “against legitimate targets” after Hamas for the first time in months fired a barrage of rockets Sunday.

The strike eliminated Hamas’ chief of staff for the second and larger Palestinian territory, the West Bank, plus another official behind deadly attacks on Israelis, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said. ...

The Israeli military’s top legal official said authorities were examining the strikes and that the military regrets the loss of civilian life.

Still, Military Advocate General Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi warned that such tragedies are inevitable “in a war of such scope and intensity.” ...

Okay, let me get this straight ... Hamas fired rockets from this area in Rafah against Israeli civilian targets. Israel responds with a strike against where these rockets came from - killing two senior Hamas terrorists - but, from which, fires spread to a nearby tent city that housed civilians.

1. Hamas fired rockets to explode among civilians inside of Israel. I don't hear anyone making demands of them for these violent attacks against Israeli citizens, eh? No? Well then, f**k you.

2. Hamas is intentionally using their citizens as human shields ... putting them directly in harm's way and callously hoping they will get killed to be used for nothing more than propaganda purposes. Hamas is just a rabid group of cowards. The IDF wasn't intentionally targeting Palestinian civilians, but such casualties are inevitable in war - especially when Hamas attacks while amongst them and then hides behind them. Oh, well.

3. The IDF is going out of its way to limit civilian casualties, but civilian casualties are going to happen in war no matter how hard you try to avoid it. How many civilians did the Allies kill in World War II? Millions. We didn't want it to happen, but it did.
