Biden’s Reckless Policy Shift, Ukraine Launches Series of Drone Attacks on Russia

Administration's approval of strikes inside Russia with American weapons raises alarm among those advocating for non-intervention

In a troubling and potentially reckless move, the Biden administration has granted Ukraine the green light to strike inside Russian territory using American-made weapons. This significant policy reversal, aimed at assisting Ukraine in defending its second-largest city, Kharkiv, comes with considerable risks. President Biden has instructed his team to ensure that Ukraine can utilize U.S. weapons to counter Russian forces attacking or preparing to attack Kharkiv. While officials claim the policy of prohibiting long-range strikes into Russia remains unchanged, this development clearly escalates America’s role in the conflict.

Ukraine’s request for this policy change followed Russia’s recent offensive on Kharkiv. The U.S. now allows Ukraine greater “flexibility” to defend against attacks near the city, deploying American weapons like rockets and rocket launchers. These weapons can target Russian missiles, troops gathering near the border, and bombers launching attacks on Ukrainian soil. However, Ukraine is barred from using these arms against civilian infrastructure or for long-range strikes, and the administration has stressed that American weapons should target only Russian military sites linked to the invasion of Ukraine.

A Ukrainian drone struck a radar station Monday near the Kazakhstan border, a critical facility for detecting missile threats from Asia. This incident was confirmed by a Ukrainian intelligence official. The following day, the governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region reported the downing of a Ukrainian drone over Armavir, which hosts two radar stations. Despite these incidents, Ukraine did not report any new attacks on Tuesday. Russian media acknowledged a strike in the region housing the radar station but provided no details on the specific target. A Ukrainian military intelligence official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the drone launch from Ukrainian territory. On Tuesday, the Armavir governor’s office announced via Telegram that air defense forces had destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle, with no casualties or damage reported. The extent of the damage from Monday’s strike remains unknown.

A senior administration official indicated that Washington has voiced its concerns to Kyiv regarding recent strikes on three nuclear early warning radar stations in Russia. Military analysts believe Ukraine aims to overstretch Russia’s air defense capabilities by targeting these radar systems, preventing Moscow from concentrating its defenses near the border. Although these radar systems are not directly involved in the current war, the strikes serve a broader strategic purpose.

Defense Express, a Ukrainian military analysis group, noted that the targeted radar system is designed to detect missile threats from the south and east, including China and India. This attack follows a pattern of aggressive Ukrainian drone operations within Russian borders, even as Ukrainian forces fend off ground advances in the southeast. Ukraine has significantly boosted its production of long-range weapons, with around 200,000 drones manufactured in the first few months of this year compared to 60,000 last year, according to the Ukrainian military’s general staff.

As global tensions rise, the international community watches nervously as Ukraine’s escalating drone and missile capabilities provoke further Russian reactions. This reckless offensive, seemingly sanctioned by the Biden administration, risks dragging the United States into a potential world war with Russia. Conservatives, who advocate for a non-interventionist stance, must critically evaluate these actions and push for a more measured and restrained foreign policy.
