By Definition Corporations are supposed to derive growth on an ongoing basis.
Private businesses do not fall into that unless they become Incorporated as a C corporation..
Small business is a different animal.. They have multiple avenues to grow and depending upon their business model and goals they can take different trails than their bigger brothers. Mostly they retain control and do not answer to a bunch of stockholders.
That said, your original statement is very true.. They would like to grow sometimes , not always, into a larger entity but there are some who are perfectly content to keep themselves as a privately owned corporation or a sub chapter S corporation.
