The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
So, quite literally, the U.S. Constitution tells the government (federal or state) that it has no power to hinder American citizens from acquiring, possessing, and carrying firearms ... and "arms" means weapons of war and ammunition.
