My father, 17 years old volunteered on a Greek frigate patrolling the waters off Egypt’s coast in WWI, as a gunner, after escaping Greece and the Nazis to Turkey’s coast, on to Cyprus, and then to Egypt with Greek forces there. His father a captain, mother, and 6 siblings. One died on the way. I have his medals.
D Day was a long time coming for all of Europe. By that time Greece had already been liberated but it was that day which marked the beginning of the end of Hitler.
