Gardening has been a challenge this year.

I already told you about my "used soil" mistake. Consequently, my tomatoes were a disaster. I've only planted ten outdoors, the others not being large enough. None of the ten are doing well and two died. I threw some tomato seeds in their plots and wouldn't be surprised if the seedlings catch up with and surpass the transplanted 2-month-old tomatoes.

Something devoured nearly all of the cucumber seedlings. I thought it was a green beetle but then found a slug. I put down snail & slug pellets and planted a new batch of cucumber seeds that are now starting to grow.

Similarly, something ate up half of one sunflower plot (about 12 plants) while not touching the second. I added snail & slug pellets without planting more sunflowers. I still have plenty.

And something ate half of my Kentucky Wonder green beans. I planted more a few days ago.

Potatoes are doing well, but they're in lousy dirt close to the house so I'm not optimistic. I think most people add sawdust or other light material to the soil they put their potatoes in. Mine are growing in the extremely rocky dirt closest to the house. The dirt was imported by the guy who did the excavation and I don't really think it was meant for a garden.

Onions are growing next to the potatoes. Only half of them are growing... but that's still around one hundred plants.

Radishes, lettuce and spinach are alive but not doing well. I should have put all these plots further from the house - where I have terrific loam.

The one raspberry bush is doing well. The marigolds I transplanted into outdoor pots are thriving.

And my wife brought home one of these from the grocery store last month. She threw it in a 5-gallon bucket to soak for a couple of weeks, then let me chop it up and transplant chunks into several large garden pots. They survived the surgery and are growing like you wouldn't believe.
