iffen yer reading on a car is down to 12V it is weak and not holding the proper stored charge ORRRRR the alternator is not working properly.
I always check the alternator to make sure its output is what it should be because the battery is only going to read correct if the alternator is replacing the spent energy and my readings usually are around 13.8 V DC

As I recall most car generators put out near 14 Vdc.
And, darn near every time I ever bothered to check a '12 Vdc supply' intended to power car electronics it was cranking out 13.8 Vdc.
