Can we stop a moment and really think about this idea of replacing Biden as the nominee. I think it’s utterly stupid. Here’s why.

This election is going to be won or lost on two items. Who gets more of their base to turn out, and who gets more of the undecided middle ground to vote for them. What would replacing Biden do to each of these?

Let’s start with the base.

There’s a lot of Democrats who might have wanted another nominee, but Biden is the one who stepped forward, and no one else put up much more than a token fight in the primaries. So we’ve got Biden capturing the nomination. If the rug is pulled out from under him, a lot of those with a soft commitment to Biden are going to feel like their vote in the primary didn’t matter. They could easily choose to sit out the general election, cutting not only the votes for Biden, but for many down ballot Democrats as well. Not at all what Democrats need.

How about the undecided?

They’d likely feel similar. Looking in from the outside, it will look like a mutiny is happening. Because it is. Biden has already said he’s not bowing out. So any replacement at this point really will be a mutiny. Why would undecided voters vote for a candidate that didn’t actually win the primary election? These people (Democrats) have a process, followed that process, then they tossed that process out and picked someone else? That is not a party that is attractive to independents. That makes Democrats look like an unorganized mess. (Which they often are, but not when it comes to rallying behind their candidate – at least not until now.)

Again, this is not what Democrats need to win the Presidency.

So this wacky, knee-jerk reaction of replacing Biden will almost certainly cause that replacement to lose, and the party to lose a bunch of down ballot races as well. With both the House and Senate at a dead heat, that will almost certainly put all three in the hands of the Republicans.

So stop this crazy talk, admit that one bad day does not make for a bad nominee, then get back to pointing out how terrible Trump and his MAGA cult are for the country, and how much better President Biden and your local Democrats will be for the economy, foreign relations, and their personal finances.

Then on November 6, we can get back to our regularly scheduled in-fighting. ;-)
