We live in a bowl of tree-covered hills. Our place is midway up, so there's a sense of elevation but also of humility.

Tonight, the town put on a pretty good fireworks show at the bottom of the bowl. I can't see to the bottom. I used to be able to see a church steeple down there but the surrounding trees have grown and created an illusion of isolation that isn't really the case. Today, I appreciated the effect because, wow, what a great show. The fireworks illuminated the area below and were themselves silhouetted, not by sky as is usually the case at an Independence Day celebration, but by the far blacker hills. The effect was to highlight each firework in a way I haven't seen before.

The other thing worth commenting on was the sound. We've all heard fireworks: Crackle! Pop! Shrieeeeek! Boom! And ka-BOOOOOOM! in any combination. But here - midway up the side of a bowl that fully contains each blast - the loud ka-BOOOOOOOMs were more like thunder, rolling on and on, swirling around and past from two sides. They were like a wind with a diminishing roar going on for a good five seconds after the initial explosions.

Given that the show lasted an hour (and I don't know who paid for it... probably not our little town), it was great entertainment made all the better by this moonless night and a superb vantage point. I couldn't have scripted it any better.
