There is a nasty little trick that those 'manning' the walk thru magnetometers pull.
As you walk thru, an agent will step across your path, so close that you will involuntarily take a step back to avoid getting run over. If you do, you will probably brush into the side of the machine which WILL set it off.
This (by the TSA) is NOT an 'accident'. It is done so they can pat you down and otherwise search you - without a warrant.
Have had this little trick pulled on me TWICE - once at an airport, the second time at a courthouse. Wasn't till the second time it happened that I caught on that it was actually intentional. Pissed me off, BIG TIME.
Can remember the days when people walked across the asphalt to the stairs to get on a plane - with any friends or relatives there with you seeing you off.
