Joey has a friend, Mark, who just graduated from UCSD (Math) and has been accepted to graduate school (Computer Science) by Cornell. He's 22 and only got his drivers license two months ago. Things sure have changed since I was a kid, when everyone I knew was chomping at the bit to get a license the day they turned 16.

He bought a car and my son offered to help him drive across the U.S. It's a pretty good experience for a couple of kids their age. (Joey is about to turn 25. When do I have to stop calling him a kid?)

On the way, they stopped in Chicago and picked up Mark's brother who had flown in from a town near London just to participate.

Monday night, out of the blue, Joey called and asked if we might join them for lunch/dinner on Tuesday. We jumped at the chance, of course. It seems that for one reason or another, they found themselves in upstate New York and intended to take I-91 to Greenwich CT, passing very close to where we live. They would stay with friends Tuesday, then drop Joey off in NYC, probably on Wednesday. Joey has friends there and isn't sure how long he'll stay. The two brothers will continue their trip to Ithaca. I'm not sure how long John will be staying in the States, but he'll ultimately be returning to his job in U.K.

So, what a treat! The five of us (including Mrs. De, of course) went to a Mexican restaurant in one of our small cities (Keene) and talked and talked and talked, then walked around town until sunset.
