The worst was 1979 - an F5 tornado in Wichita Falls, Texas. It started as three funnels on the rural, southwest side of town that steadily moved towards each other to form one massive funnel that was a mile wide on the ground. The funnel stayed on the ground for 8 miles heading east northeast across the southern side of the city. Wichita Falls is a city of about 100,000 residents (Sheppard Air Force Base is just north of it) that lies less than 20 miles south of the Red River (Oklahoma border) in North Texas.

Started out as three funnels.

Became one, mile-wide funnel.

We had slab-parties (have a keg delivered and set up on one of the many empty slab foundations in those neighborhoods) for months.

One of the weirdest was in Dallas in the mid-1980s. Watched a massive, pitch-black front roll in when the temperature was in the high 70s to 80 degrees. It rolled over us very fast and within 15 minutes the temperature was down to the upper 30s.

Re: “A severe storm with potential tornadoes is beginning to move into the area. It is blacker than the ace of spades.”
A storm came through yesterday that delivered one of the two closest lightning strikes I've ever seen. I was at the older house, turning toward the sliding glass window when the opposite side of the street - which is nearby at that house -lit up bright with an instantaneous and deafening CRAAAAACCK!! It was sort of a sharp ripping sound. That side of the street has a field concealed by a thin line of trees. I think it hit in that field, about 150 feet away, just out of sight thanks to the trees. But since I wasn't looking right at it, it may have been even closer.

The only other strike that was that close was in Guam, when I was in the office before sunrise and looking out at the parking lot. I saw a bolt hit a telephone pole in the parking lot and set its transformer ablaze. For 15 seconds or so, the pole looked just like a giant match stick! There were no other witnesses... I was the only one in the office.

I bet ribit and Beldin have some thunderstorm stories that rival or surpass mine.
