Back in 1982 when the commercial airliner crashed into the 14th Street bridge between Va - DC. And 1/2 hour later a metro subway train derailed killing 3 people. The first responders from Alexandria,Arlington,Fairfax,DC the Airport and Metro had a huge problem communicating. The mutual aid channels were overwhelmed. There was no protocol as to who had command. Each agency was basically on their own. It was a screwed up response.
Big investigation. After that screwup. The cities counties states and Congress promised to solve the problem. Standards were enacted. Hundreds of Millions of dollars were spend upgrading communications. federal mandates were forced onto localities.
Fast forward 42 years later to July 13 2024. The Secret Service snipers were using their own personal mobile phones sending receiving text. Local cops were calling each other asking their supervisor to text the Secret Service guys warning about a guy on the roof with a gun.
The locals probably all could talk to each other. The probably set up a talk group for that detail. But they couldn’t talk to the Feds cause the Feds use special encrypted secret radios.
This is how well the government works. 42 years. Hundreds of millions of dollars. Can’t talk to each other a couple hundred yards away.
