Deepest gorge on earth in relation to its width, at 1100m.
Lots of history, independence war against the Turks in 1821, WW fight against Italians who were routed, then the Nazis came down, huge resistance throughout these mountains, then civil war after liberation, 1944-45 to 48, Communists against the rest, they all had fought against the Nazis, then each other, terrible atrocities against brothers, the Brits helped, then the US helped to put down the Popular Front, ΔΣΕ, and sent their fighters into communist Albania. Tito, surprisingly closed his border to them. Terrible crimes committed from both sides. Just watched some historical perspectives, for something that’s still a wound here, and while we called them communists, they really had not much of an idea that they wanted Stalinism, they just wanted “people rule”, not having crystalized what that would become, young men and women fighting in those mountains and in Athens, taking hostages, executions at will, etc.
Anyway, lots of angles, the old guys from that time talk without enmity any more just their experiences. Fascinating storytelling, the end of WWII and the power struggle east-west that ensued, but this is in Greek on Youtube, there may be stuff in english if anyone is interested in understanding what happened in the Balkans after the war, from the Greek civil war perspective.
Every stone up there has seen blood on it. A mesmerizingly beautiful part of Greece unknown to ….tourists at large.
One of the beautiful areas there is Papigo:
