We know he was threatened, but we have no way of knowing whether the threat would have been carried out, or if it would have succeeded. In a way, it's too bad Biden didn't stick to his guns and dare them to do it. I think there's a good chance they would not have. Not only would whoever rose to fill the gap have been doomed in November due to voter resentment, but there's also an excellent chance that the DNC's leadership would have realized this and chickened out.

It's a real shame that neither Biden nor Trump were smart enough to see this outcome when Biden told Trump he wanted to debate in July. That's about two months earlier than anyone has ever debated at this level. It's insane, since there's still so much campaigning to do and so many voters who would forget all about the debate by the time of the election. Without that debate, Joe Biden would have been the one nominated yesterday.
