Gonna need to do a LOT more than that.

Starting day one - Need to check the Constitution and axe any and ALL federal programs NOT listed as a responsibility of the Fed. Check ALL spending programs in existence and see if they are Constitutionally permitted - and not Constitutionally permitted ones need ALL unspent funds pulled back. Put All those now unspent tax dollars towards paying down the debt.

Once some shrinkage in the federal debt has been achieved - and I mean a significant shrinkage - reduce federal taxes while still enabling the debt to be paid down. Advise the States that they should increase their taxes by about half what the federal shrinks. (High tax states should seriously think about REDUCING their own tax rates.) Continue paying down debt.

First time one of those 'Monster Bills' hits the Presidents desk he needs to call the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the media into emergency session. Have a fork truck drop that abortion of a 'bill' onto the floor and announce "This is NOT a Bill". Then start pulling some of the more outrageous earmarks out of it and make the congress 'Vote' (I would suggest show of hands but a recorded vote might be better except for the amount of time that would take). Finally pull out the ONE part of the 'Bill' that ought to be passed (if there is one) and hold a recorded vote on it. If it passes, sign it and say "The rest of this pile of paper is nothing but recyclable garbage".

I'm sure there are other things that ought to be done as well . . .

Welfare at the federal level is Un-Constitutional and needs to be abolished - along with medicaid. However, I would be willing to allow it to live till the federal taxes have began shrinking then kick both down to the State levels where they belong and encourage the States to increase their tax rates (about half the federal shrinkage) to pay for their welfare and medicaid needs.

Social Security and Medicare need to be morphed from the ponzi congressional slush funds they are today into honest to god real live self supporting retirement accounts.

I got two can openers De and lots of Bush's baked beans and cans of sardines. Peanut butter, crackers, lots of jars of preserves and graham crackers. (sorry, no animal crackers)

BUTTTTT, maybe I should go get me a bunch of bags of those. I like them.. lol!!!!

Now, on a serious note, for the reasons as to why the deficit has hit these historic numbers, it is a rational and needed policy of BELOW budgetary fiscal constraints OR

one can impose a freeze on spending limits which need to be backed off say 10 percent, and keep it that way.

This drunken sailor spending by bureaucrats has got to be put in reverse and the gas pedal stomped to the floor.

That means lots of people's freebie programs are going to need to be curtailed and a balanced budget required....

Will this create some financially tough times? You bet.

But ya got to bite the bullet sometime iffen ya don;t want to become the Weimar republic.
