Re: “...online auction. There's people out there who will buy anything if it's cheap enuf.”
Hey, we're getting better. There were actually 3 auctions today (Wednesday) that we skipped because, after reviewing them, they didn't have any "must have" items. If an auction has even one such lot, it frees us up to bid on all the little crap it has too. It's sort of a "If we're going there anyway, we may as well bid on the painting of the old lady sitting on the loo" policy.

We're also getting to be on a first name basis with the staff at our local Goodwill's drop off center. They can have the ten 1890-ish plated teaspoons we just bought. I only bought 'em to get the two that were sterling.

On a slightly different subject, we went to a townwide yard sale on Saturday. It's a thing out here where, on some agreed-upon date, everyone in a one-horse town is encouraged to have a sale. It motivates folks like us to drive fifty miles once a year to their little hole-in-the-wall and helps keep their town free of signs the rest of the year. So, this one guy was selling such a myriad of junk on tables at the street that the topic turned to how he'd acquired it. Turns out, he's one of those guys who buys storage units at auction, like they do on TV. "I've always thought about doing that!" I exclaimed. "Don't," he advised. "It's a lot of work. And you see that pile in front of my garage?" He pointed to a mound close to his house, at least ten feet across and six feet high. "That's what I still haven't gone through." Given that this time of year it rains about every other minute, that really did steal a bit of the romance from the profession. Wow, what a hassle. One thing about us: If we can't get it into our barn, we don't buy it!
