Beldin > Yes, you get tax deferral until distributions. But, once distributions start, it is worse from a "capital gains perspective" because all of those capital gains that get distributed are taxed at ordinary income tax rates - not the lower capital gains rates.

That is what I was thinking.

Which reminds me of the year old OCU was griping about the lower capital gains tax rate (and the lower qualified dividends tax rate) . . .

Now I have a 401K. And I also have individual stock holdings. That is when I realized that, obviously, I was smarter than OCU ever thought about being. I figure OCU was probably making about twice what i was . . and he was bragging about stuffing all the money he could into his IRA and 401k . . and he isn't smart enough to realize that with the lower rates he ought to have been investing in both - tax deferred and tax paid vehicles - so as to take advantage of both tax deferral and the lower rates.

Zim ~ "IRA's and 401K's are 'tax deferred' - Meaning no taxes are due from them until such time as they are cashed out - then ordinary income tax is due from them. No capital gains there."

Yes, you get tax deferral until distributions. But, once distributions start, it is worse from a "capital gains perspective" because all of those capital gains that get distributed are taxed at ordinary income tax rates - not the lower capital gains rates.
