Before that boating accident, I used to carry a .357. My wife says it's the only common handgun that'll stop a big bear. The 10 mm Riley Hill was carrying is even better (but it's not as common). As he said, his first shot with it only got the bear's attention.

They are exceedingly lucky ... at 530 pounds, this was an average sized grizzly bear. In Alaska, grizzlies can get up to over 700 pounds (males) and up to 350 to 400 pounds (females). Also, they were only armed with bows and handguns. 10mm and .45 ACP, if loaded with +Ps, can pack a wallop, but are decidedly light for a grizzly bear. They really, really needed a large bore rifle.
