I bought a little 2-way radio for $16 thinking that it was a "Base Camp" CB radio. That's not what it is. It appears to be much more powerful. It has a 36 mile range even though it's really small (the antenna is 4 inches.) That's because it's not CB, it's VHS. I'm wondering if this is what boaters use?

The radio is powered by either AA batteries or a NiMH battery pack that's proprietary to Midland. I hope they still sell it though the one in the radio is working. The NiMH can be recharged with the built-in crank. There are 7 WX channels and 22 GMRS channels, as well as AM and FM. Right now... after midnight... I'm not hearing anything on WX or GMRS except a weather forecast on WX channel 4.

I'll need to register with the FCC in order to transmit on it legally. I gather that registering is pretty easy. And it costs $35 for the immediate family for ten years. While it sounds cheap, it's more than twice what I spent on the radio. I won't be in a rush to register. For one thing, it doesn't sound like a radio for casual use / screwing around, so I probably won't do much talking. For another, in a TEOTWAWKI situation, I don't particularly want the local authorities to know who I am or that I could be listening in. So, for now, no registering.
