The last time we were in Colorado Springs was in July 2015. We were driving to Michigan and stopped there to spend a few days with my cousin. We had plans to go up to Pikes Peak but my wife became very ill with altitude sickness (my cousin is an RN) and while we didn't take her to the hospital, we did cut our visit short and as we were driving East across Kansas, she improved immediately. Anytime we now head East from SoCal, it's either by the 10 or the 40 as those routes don't go through any high mountains.

This is the season to be out West with 70s, 80s, 60s at night, sunshine all day long, dry air. Went up Pikes Peak, 14300’, third try was a charm as two times years before it was either snowing in summer or terrible thunderstorms. Perfect weather, 40s, lack of oxygen, you feel it as you can get momentarily dizzy at times, but the more you walk and move around there you get acclimated.

Took a ride around the Garden of the Gods, 15 miles, 6400’ altitude, my system felt it, heavy breathing on those stiff hills, dry air, when I came back I started coughing, my chest was raw, had a tea with honey and I stopped coughing. Went for lunch, bison burger, red wine, all good. Next.

Onward south from here, Utah……
