I'm fasting today. Water only. If I make it 24 hours, it will be the first time I've ever done that. Even colonoscopy prep is tame by comparison.

I think it's easy to SAY you're going to fast a whole day, and maybe some of you have. But I'm not so naive as to speak in ignorance about my own ability. It's a little after noon and I'm already hungry. I've twice found myself walking into the kitchen to find something to eat before remembering that I can't do that.

The article I discussed doesn't even suggest cutting off all food like this. It advises people interested in trying this to work with a dietician to make sure they still get adequate nutrients. It also discusses numerous ways to fast - from fasting for 18 hours per day, to fasting two days per week, to fasting three days per week to, finally, fasting every second day. It also discusses several alternatives to fasting - from 1,000 calories per day down to 500 calories per day, perhaps working to 500 calories gradually, over a couple of months. I don't think the authors believe that anyone can maintain a fasting regiment stricter than 500 calories on the days they fast. They're probably right.

Finally, the authors discuss the diet of Okinawa residents. It's largely comprised of Okinawa sweet potato - which is high in nutrients and low in calories - and other vegetables along with occasional fasts. That's always an option, though I don't know where I'd find Okinawa sweet potatoes.
