You could probably grow them inside in five gallon buckets with straw.
We grew regular potatoes outside in buckets in Virginia. They came out great. Nice and clean. Leave the buckets outside until the weather gets cold, then move them inside to finish growing. YouTube has a bunch of how-to videos.

Thanks for all that info! How were the ones your girlfriend grew? Do they taste like regular sweet potatoes?

I was reading that sweet potatoes can be grown in New Hampshire. However, they require far more time than they do in warmer climes. Only in the best of years do we have 180 growing days, and that's apparently what they take in our state.

Perhaps I could grow a few indoors in pots for their first couple of months, thereby starting them in March and giving myself a longer growing season.
