I'm going to be putting up a lot of floor to (almost) ceiling supports for wall-mounted shelving. They're going in the basement, and I don't care too much about their appearance. They're just cheap pine boards - they were 8' x 12" x 2" before I cut them to size.

My question is, before I paint them white (using very cheap paint), how important is primer? Is primer+paint better for this purpose than two coats of cheap paint?

If you know, I'd appreciate your opinion.

BTW, when I say cheap, I'm not kidding. I think I can get some interior paint from a clearance outlet for $10/gallon. All I really want it to do is to give the wood long-term protection from basement humidity. Bookshelf verticals don't need to be beautiful.

Thanks!
