I bet you carry a smart phone. I don't. I'm not a Luddite. I choose my battles based on whether the benefit derived exceeds the cost. In the case of an Echo, it does. In the case of a smart phone, it doesn't.

I will say this, though: I am careful of what I say in the Echo's presence. Even if it only listens when you speak its name, I have no way of knowing if it will always operate that way.

I have to take medicines at certain times each day. Tonight, I have an auction I don't want to miss, with the first lot I care about starting at 8:39 tonight. I have a reminder set for 5 minutes ahead so that I don't have to sit there watching it.

I was once dead set against putting an echo in my house. I know others who were the same way. Those of us who gave it a try found it so extremely useful that giving it up wasn't even considered.
