Rather than getting pricey bi-focals or tri-focals, a few months ago I bought several pairs of single prescription glasses dedicated to distance, computer use or reading. It's the second time I've done that. I buy three styles of frames so it's obvious which pair does what.

I hardly ever use the distance glasses. I had lasik 25 years ago and my distance vision is still decent.

While I went low end, the on-line seller had a nice selection of both plastic and metal frames. They look fine - but I'm not a social butterfly - unlike most of this board's members - so who cares? I passed on scratch resistant lenses, ultra-thin lenses, transition lenses and tinted lenses. I re-used my last prescription.

I wanted replacement glasses because I'd lost two pairs, scratched two others and stepped on one pair while mowing a field. Entirely my fault.

Every four years or so, I'll get an exam. Cataracts run in my family, so a doctor should check my eyes every so often.

Oh, the price. I paid $10 per pair - up from $6 per pair 18 months ago.

I didn't buy prescription sunglasses since I don't like them, but I could have. If everything else had stayed the same, they would have been $20 apiece.

I picked up my new prescription lenses for my sunglasses. Just the lenses. I used the old frames I’ve had for five years. They were $417. Just the freakin lenses. I had had a new exam a couple weeks ago and it was $289. My copay on the exam was $54.
