I'm not surprised, but probably not for the reason you expect.
I would not be the least surprised if the judgement was a poor one and simply based on two dimensional American ideas of rights and equality, rather than people with anti-social attitudes doing ani-social things.
Had my own experience with an orthodox Jew on a plane. Let's just say I sure as hell knew I was a gentile. If 100 of them attempted to enter a plane with the same attitude, I'd completely understand why they were banned.
The problem might easily have been nothing to do with the fact they were Jewish and everything to do with the fact that fundamentalists of many religions are hard work to be around.
