There were four auctions Thursday. We won 15 lots at auction #1 while spending just $20. That's got to be some sort of a record. At the other three auctions, we won just nine lots and spent a more typical $90. (Plus auction house fees of between 15% and 18%.)

One of the "wins" was a thermometer / hygrometer for $11. It turns out that it, or something very much like it, sells new at Tractor Supply for $9.99. So I blew it. I don't make mistakes like this too often, but once in a while. After participating in dozens of auctions and seeing, literally, thousands of items come and go, I sometimes remember (or I think I remember) what things previously went for and what they must be worth. That's bad logic! You've got to do your homework and know where to draw the line when buying other people's junk. Fortunately, I didn't make too big of a mistake this time.

Re: “One includes a full Pioneer stereo setup - turntable, receiver, cassette deck (yes, it's that old), nice looking speakers and a standard glass cabinet. $37.”There's no auction tonight. I'm responding to a post I made a year ago since I finally got around to testing this equipment today. The Pioneer tape deck doesn't work. It doesn't play, or rewind, fast forward or anything, though it does light up and whir annoyingly upon power up. My early guess would be a problem with a belt. The turntable doesn't spin. If I set the needle and spin the turntable manually it works, but that's unacceptable. It also makes a faint sound when the arm is over the record. I'll have to open both units to see if the problems might be fixable, but I'm not making any bets.

The receiver (actually, it's an amp) and tuner both work, though I'm only picking up one FM station with acceptable fidelity. The stereo is in my basement and I'm a long way from any radio stations, so one station isn't a surprise. If I run the antenna wire outside, I bet reception will improve.

The Pioneer speakers are excellent. They sound better than my Infinity speakers, and I think the Infinitys ran about $400 when I bought them in the 80s. Even with broken components, this was a great buy.

One thing I did notice is that the Pioneer stereo cabinet is unusually shallow. In other words, I'm not likely to be able to replace the tapedeck. The turntable is another matter. It sits on top of the cabinet, so I can probably plop another maker's turntable up there and play it.
